Badda Skat Releases
GRASS DUBS: The Complete Dub Follow-up to his Debut Album, “Grass Roots”
With a flick of deh wrist a make you jump an' twist… as I would say! 2009 meets 1979 Kingston, Jamaica with
the latest dub album release from up-and-coming reggae artist, Badda Skat.
St. Petersburg, Florida (BSP) May 25, 2009 – Dub is to
Reggae music as red, yellow and blue are to the spectrum. Stripped down to its bare essentials, an
unobstructed rhythm with emphasis on the bass, containing echo effects and vocal highlights would best describe this obscure genre of music.
Badda Skat, at 28 years of age, draws inspiration
from the Jamaican music pioneers of the 70’s and 80’s who originated the style
known as Dub. With his latest release "GRASS DUBS," Badda not only channels an old sound that many may have never heard before, but he also manages to maintain a strangely familar quality throughout.
Dub is essentially the “drum and bass” mix of a full reggae
song. Unique to reggae music, and largely unheard of in the United States, dub
albums were occasionally released alongside the full album as a separate record, or
more commonly as the B side of the standard 45 record single. Dub tracks were the foundation for the early
“deejay,” and the stepping stone to what is known as Dancehall today.
Dub versions have lost their common place in today's mainstream, but
still shine through as a testament to the roots of dancehall reggae music. A fully-produced “riddim” is usually what most dancehall artists start with to lay down
their lyrics these days, thus creating their own songs. Before this however, there was
only dub, and this is what fueled the creative fire of that time.
It would take fully experiencing the album to understand exactly why a reggae artist would release a dub album in 2009. From the unique
physical design elements of the cd, down to the background city sounds of “Cyann Tek
Dub,” this album is still very “Grass Roots,” but with a
vintage feel. Completely mixed, mastered, and dubbed by Badda Skat in his own
DubShot Studios, GRASS DUBS is also a great expressive piece from Badda, as it gives insight into the character of this artist.
“Badda Skat delivers nothing but positive and uplifting vibes
throughout. Badda is a real talent and big things are sure to follow,” says the
UK Reggae Guide crew. This is one of those “big things."
